Anichess launches Season 8 “Overpowered” with 700.000 CHECK prize pool and major gameplay and token changes

TL;DR

  • Season 8 makes every spell overpowered simultaneously, accelerating match pacing.

  • Player ratings reset to zero; 700,000 CHECK tokens distributed.

  • Gambit mode wagers tokens; peak hours award double points.

Anichess has launched Season 8: Overpowered, fundamentally reshaping how spells function across the entire game. Rather than fine-tuning individual abilities through incremental nerfs and buffs, the developers applied a wholesale philosophy: make every spell overpower simultaneously. The result accelerates match pacing, forces rapid adaptation from players, and signals a deliberate departure from previous seasonal metas where certain spells dominated while others remained niche choices.

The new season opens with fresh ladders in both Gambit and Standard modes, resetting player ratings to zero and eliminating accumulated rank advantages. All competitors begin on equal standing, regardless of their performance in Season 7. A total of 700,000 CHECK tokens are distributed throughout the season, with 600,000 reserved for the Gambit mode prize pool alone.

Ethernal token holders receive their entire remaining CHECK allocation in a single transaction, eliminating staggered payouts and immediately granting them capital to deploy in the new economy.

The philosophy behind universal spell buffs appears straightforward: remove the meta constraints that emerge naturally when some abilities outperform others. When players must choose between seven spells and three clearly dominate, competitive play becomes repetitive.

Everyone defaults to selecting overpowered spells, narrowing strategic diversity. By buffing all spells equally, the designers preserve relative balance while amplifying the game’s overall tempo. Matches conclude faster, gameplay feels more explosive, and moment-to-moment decision-making accelerates. Players cannot afford passive play when every action carries amplified consequences.

Gambit Mode: Wagering Tokens on Accelerated Matches

Gambit mode operates as the high-stakes format where players wager CHECK tokens directly on match outcomes. Season 8 resets every player’s Gambit rating to zero, with each competitor beginning with 100 CHECK on the line. The weekly leaderboard distributes rewards from the 600,000 CHECK pool based on accumulated points.

Notably, the developers introduced peak-hour incentives: matches played between 13:30 and 16:30 UTC award double points, incentivizing participation during high-activity windows when matchmaking works most efficiently.

One significant change: Shot in the Dark remains disabled throughout Season 8 in Gambit mode. This spell—presumably a high-variance ability—apparently conflicted with the new balance framework, necessitating its temporary removal. Spell assignment in Gambit occurs randomly at the start of each match, preventing players from specializing in specific ability combinations and forcing adaptation to whatever the game randomly distributes.

Standard mode shifts its reward structure to emphasize cumulative progress rather than pure leaderboard ranking. Players can accumulate up to 2,000 CHECK through rating milestones—bonuses granted for reaching specific ranks. Weekly one-off rewards supplement milestone progress, tying directly to individual performance. Checkmate Arena continues offering random drops that award between 20,000 and 30,000 CHECK, providing high-variance opportunities for lucky players alongside deterministic rewards for consistent performance.

A new currency, M8, enters the economy as the gateway to competitive formats. Players completing 15 Standard matches weekly earn M8. Alternatively, they can generate M8 through staking CHECK, creating a dual-income pathway. Active players who prefer grinding matches accumulate M8 through play. More passive players can lock capital into staking mechanisms and earn the same currency without constant competitive engagement.

The new Plasma Beam spell exemplifies Season 8’s design direction. Rather than affecting a single piece, Plasma Beam clears multiple pieces in one activation, forcing opponents into radically different positioning strategies. Existing spells underwent dramatic reworks.

Shift now casts 99 times per match instead of its previous limitation, fundamentally altering available tactics. Tactical Necessity flipped its economy—rather than costing mana, it now generates four mana per cast. Queen Time received modifications enabling new capture sequences that previous mechanics prevented.
